Using a slow computer network can be as boring as watching paint dry. Whether you need to make a video call, play an online game, or watch your favorite Netflix show, a poor network speed will absolutely ruin your overall internet experience. If you have some important business to deal with, it can understandably cause a lot of frustration.

To help boost your network speed, we are listing some of the best and easiest ways to fix this all by yourself:

Ways to Increase your Network Speed

We will break down these into two ways:

  • By Software
  • By Hardware

Software

Take a Speed Test

The first thing you need to do is test your current network speed. This is how you can find out if there really is a problem with your network or with your computer device. If you are not receiving the speed as promised by your service provider then chances are that your computer may contain viruses, malware, or a misconfiguration in your network settings.

You can use Speedtests.net by Ookla to perform a network test. This is one of the reliable websites to test your computer network speed.

Check Background Processes

Keep a check on programs running in the background as they can thwart your internet speed a great deal. Some of these programs start automatically when you turn on your computer. In order to get rid of them, press CTRL + ALT + DEL to open Task Manager and close any unwanted programs processing in the background.

Update Device Software Regularly

Your router device or modem contains its own software. Make sure that it is correctly configured and regularly updated.

Scan and Remove Adware

Viruses, malware, and adware are a menace to your computer and its network. You should make sure that you have an anti-virus or security program installed in order to scan and remove any malicious programs that may be slowing down your network.

Hardware

Improve Router Placement

Placing your router at the right spot can uplift your network performance. Ideally, you should place it at a central location and at a good height. Also, clear any Signal Interferences from devices like cordless phones, microwaves, baby monitors, etc. For better horizontal reach, point your antenna upwards. For better vertical reach, point it sideways.

Use Repeater to Boost Wi-Fi Signal

If you are using a Wi-Fi router in a large house or office and signals don’t reach everywhere, then you should use a “repeater” device to extend the Wi-Fi range to the entire area.

“Did you try turning it off and on again?”

It is generally advised to turn off your modem for 20-30 seconds and turn it on again. Your router is a small computer and it benefits from occasional resetting to work the right way.

Protect Device from Overheating

Overheating can slow down network devices and cause them to malfunction. This wouldn’t speed up your network immediately but it is better to keep your network devices cool by using fans and heat vents.

Final Word

It takes patience to work with a slow network but by taking the right steps, you can get rid of lags and make the most of a speedy network connection.
