Guest Wi-Fi network security is really the other half of the same problem. Because anything that can reach your network can potentially reach everything else on it.
On a flat network, a guest’s infected laptop, or an unpatched smart camera is not walled off from your file server or your point-of-sale system. It can, at least in theory, talk to it directly.

Smart devices can introduce security risks
Smart TVs, cameras, displays, printers, and other connected devices may seem harmless, but they can still introduce vulnerabilities into a business network.
Palo Alto Networks analyzed more than 27 million connected devices for its 2025 Device Security Threat Report and found that about 21% of IoT devices had at least one known vulnerability.
That makes it important to think about not only which smart devices are connected to your network, but also what those devices can access.
Guests bring devices you do not control
A customer’s or contractor’s phone or laptop may be perfectly secure, or it could have outdated software, malware, or other security problems you know nothing about.
Your business does not manage or monitor those devices, which is why they should be kept separate from employee computers and other business systems.
One flat network can increase the risk
When everything shares the same network, a compromised device may have more opportunities to communicate with other systems.
Palo Alto Networks found that 48.2% of connections from IoT devices to company IT systems came from high-risk IoT devices.
Network segmentation helps put boundaries between those devices and more sensitive business systems. CISA recommends segmentation as a way to help contain an intrusion and limit an attacker’s ability to move from one part of a network to another.
What Real Segmentation Looks Like for a Small Office
Segmentation does not require an enterprise budget or a dedicated IT department. For most small businesses, it comes down to three clearly separated zones:
- A guest network for visitors, isolated and internet-only, with no path to internal drives or devices
- A smart device network for thermostats, cameras, and printers, kept apart from staff computers
- A staff network for work computers, with access to shared drives, business applications, and printers as needed
This kind of separation also limits how far a ransomware infection can spread if one device does get compromised, since it cannot simply hop across to every other system on the same network.
Setting This Up Without an Enterprise Budget
Check what your existing equipment can do
Separating guest Wi-Fi and smart devices does not necessarily require an expensive network overhaul.
Many business routers and wireless access points offer features for creating guest networks or separating devices into different parts of the network. Before buying new equipment, check whether your existing setup already provides those options.
Follow established security guidance
The Federal Trade Commission’s Start with Security guide recommends network segmentation as one way businesses can protect sensitive information. By separating parts of the network, businesses can limit which devices and users can reach important systems.
The FTC also recommends using strong passwords and protecting administrative access to your network equipment. These basic precautions work alongside network segmentation to reduce unnecessary security risks.
For a small office, the goal is straightforward: give guests their own Wi-Fi, keep smart devices separate from work computers when possible, and make sure those networks cannot freely access sensitive business systems.
